High Beeches Primary School Newsletter 27th April 2012

It certainly has been a very busy start to the summer (!) term. Well done to the Year 6 children for their wonderful assembly last Friday and the Year 3 and 4 recorder club gave us a wonderful performance in assembly on Thursday. The Year 1 children all enjoyed their visit to Butterfly World, Year 3 have visited Batford to investigate how our locality has changed over time and eight Year 5 and 6 children represented the school at the local chess jamboree on Wednesday
Next week all after school clubs will begin (weather permitting), please see the table below. Year 4 will be visiting the Common on Monday, Year 2 recorder club will be performing in assembly on Thursday 3rd May, Year 3 have their class assembly on Friday 4th May and Year 5 will be visiting the British Museum on the same day.  It is wonderful to see the children engaged in so many valuable learning opportunities.

Book Fair
On Wednesday 2nd May the travelling Book Fair arrives in school. The Book Fair is an excellent opportunity for the children to purchase books and also enables the school to gain commission towards books for the school. The Book Fair will be open after school every day. This year they have a fantastic summer offer of three books for the price of two with the cheapest book being free.
In order to run the book fair we do require adult volunteers. If you are able to help for half an hour after school anytime next week please speak to Mrs Savage, thank you.

Catering Vacancy
We currently have an opportunity to join our dedicated catering team. Our school lunches are fabulous and we have one of the highest uptakes for meals in the County. We have a vacancy for a General Assistant to join our wonderful team. The vacancy is for 12.5hrs a week, 2.5 hrs a day. If you are interested in this post please speak to Mrs Nugent in the kitchen or to Mr Driver.

Chess Jamboree
On Tuesday eight children from Years 5 and 6 represented the school at the Harpenden District Sports Association Chess Jamboree. George Kershaw, Neo Wishart, Anna Jackson, Sophie Jackson, Daniel Booth, Edward Vickery, Fiona McArdle and Jessica Nottingham played extremely well against some tough opposition. Thank you to Mr Conquest for his help running the chess club and preparing the team.

Message received from a local resident
Please see below a note that was sent from a local resident to all schools which we have been asked to print in our newsletter.

‘I just wanted to let you know that on Wednesday morning I had parked legally and safely near the roundabout junction of Crabtree Lane and Aldwickbury in order to drop two of my children off at Crabtree Schools before going on to drop off my third at Batford Nursery.   It was very rainy and there was heavy traffic exacerbated by tailbacks on Station Road causing some drivers to zip up Dalkeith and down Crabtree.

Waiting to get out of my car due to the queuing traffic behind me you can imagine my surprise when a woman drove into my rear right bumper but decided to just drive on and ignore it heading off along Aldwickbury.  There was a significant bang heard in my car which shocked my three kids who were still inside and as the woman drove past it was clear she had heard a bang too.

I wrote down the number plate!

Given my nature I gave her a second chance thinking she must be doing some kind of school drop off in the area and might stop on the way back. As I came out of Crabtree Schools I walked slowly in the hope of seeing her come back down Aldwickbury - which she did.  She drove past my car and kept on going!

Does she know the damage she has caused my car? No.  Did hitting my car make more noise than hitting a child at low speed would?  Probably. Would she know or stop if she had injured a child?

This woman broke the law.’

Newsletter 20.04.12

I hope that you have had a wonderful Easter holiday. It is hard to believe that we are beginning the final term of the year already. We have many exciting activities and events planned throughout the term and are all especially looking forward to celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and continuing the countdown to the Olympic Games. Please check through the diary dates and remember that these are always available on the school website http://www.highbeeches.herts.sch.uk/ follow the information link and calendar.

Many of you will be aware of the demand for school places in Harpenden. We recently met with Local Authority Officers to discuss the need for an additional two classes in the town and the possibility of increasing the intake for the Early Years to 60 children at High Beeches for September 2013.  We have since been informed that although we are a very popular school by parental preference difficulties regarding the highways have meant that we will not be allocated the extra class.  An update on the Free School was recently sent to interested parents. The preferred site for this continues to be Crabtree Fields though no final decision has been made and they are seeking temporary accommodation for next year both within and outside the Harpenden Parish Boundary.

Our learning focus for this half term is ‘Push Yourself’. The children will be thinking about finding ways to push themselves even when things are difficult and how pushing themselves makes them better at things.

We would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Mrs Shield who has decorated a new cake for our Birthday Assemblies. The cake looks wonderful thank you.

The Sainsbury’s sports equipment voucher promotion has now finished in store. Please send any vouchers into school by next Fri. Thank you for all of the vouchers we have received to date.

On Monday Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Beavers and Rainbows will be able to wear their uniform to school for St George’s Day.
I hope that you all have an enjoyable weekend.

Discovering Harpenden Common

In the short time the Harpenden Common Discovery Day has been running it has become an annual family favourite in Harpenden. This year the event will take place on Saturday 16 June from 10am until 5pm and will again be free to attend. Confirmed attractions include sheep shearing, falconry displays, a dancing dog display, a dog show and ferret racing.
The aim of the event is to promote Harpenden Common and encourage people to find out about this wonderful asset in the heart of their community. It includes 3 nature trails, a horse ride, ponds, hay meadow, woodland and is home to a variety of sporting clubs. Over the decades Harpenden Common has had varied uses including grazing for sheep, horseracing, hunting, ice skating, athletics, football, cricket, golf, circuses and fairs.
There are a number of opportunities for local charities and community groups associated with nature and environment to promote their issues for free by holding activities, having a stall or fundraising.  If you would like to get involved, contact Dan Taylor on 01582 463665, dan.taylor@harpenden.gov.uk or visit www.harpenden.gov.uk.
